The Threatened Species Commissioner has revealed heartbreaking photos of a stunning wedge-tailed eagle after being hit by a car in rural Australia.

Commissioner Gregory Andrews posted the photos of the dead bird on Twitter and asked for drivers to slow down when the see them on the road.

‘They’re very big birds and need extra time to take off,’ he added.

‘So sad to see such a magnificent creature killed this way, especially as it could easily be prevented,’ one commenter said, while others said it was ‘heartbreaking’ and ‘so very sad’.

‘What an amazing bird… sad another has been lost,’ another comment said.

The wedge-tailed eagle, also known as the eaglehawk, is Australia’s largest bird of prey. 

Mr Andrews took the photo while on a family holiday, and a spokeswoman for the Department of the Environment and Energy said he is in a remote part of Australia and could not be immediately contacted for comment.
