Two teenagers and a young man accused of murdering a Brisbane doctor with a sawn-off shotgun at his home have fronted a Queensland court.

Joshua Hamilton, 19, Billy Smith, 20, and a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were not required to appear in the Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on Saturday.

The trio are charged with the late-night shooting murder of Luping Zeng, 56, at his MacGregor home during a botched robbery attempt on Monday night.

Bail was not applied for and all three were remanded in custody.

Hamilton and Smith will reappear in the same court on April 23 and June 3, respectively.

The boy will appear in the Children’s Court on June 10.

They have also been charged with entering a dwelling with intent, attempted robbery with violence, possession of shortened firearms and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police believe the trio didn’t know Dr Zeng and robbery was likely to be the motive behind his killing.

Dr Zeng was allegedly shot once in the chest while his wife and two adult daughters were inside the home.

He was taken in a critical condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he died.

Dr Zeng had three decades of medical experience, spoke three languages and was a highly regarded member of Brisbane’s Chinese community.

He moved to Australia in 2000 and worked at the Waterford 7-Day Medical Centre and Skin Cancer Clinic.

The two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested in neighbouring suburbs Slacks Creek and Woodbridge, in Brisbane’s south, between 11am and 12pm on Friday, the Courier Mail reported.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming told the publication the youngest boy did not know Dr Zeng and robbery appeared to be the motive.

‘It was likely this is a crime of opportunity that has escalated and resulted in the death of Dr Zeng,’ he told reporters on Friday.

Detective Superintendent Fleming added that the killers are known to each other.

Officers were called to the home on Delfin Drive at about 11.40pm on Monday following reports a man had been shot.

The 56-year-old doctor was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

Dr Zeng’s wife was also an overseas-trained doctor and both his daughters are currently in training to become doctors.

Acting Detective Inspector Steven McCartney said the doctor’s family didn’t witness the shooting but heard the single gunshot from inside the home.

‘These are professional members of the community, they dedicate their time to helping people, this is just a tragic event that’s occurred,’ Insp McCartney said.
