Pidapipo Gelateria apologises for gender specific flavours

Pidapipo Gelateria has apologised after coming under fire for launching ‘gender-specific’ ice cream flavours

A gelato bar has apologised after coming under fire for launching ‘gender-specific’ ice cream flavours.

Pidapipo Gelateria teamed up with fashion brands Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter to create two flavours for men and women as part of a spring fashion event last week.

The Melbourne gelateria, which has stores in Carlton and Windsor, announced the new flavours on Instagram, but the post has since been deleted after attracting backlash.

‘Here are two gelato popsicles we’ve created,’ the original post read.

‘One for men and one for women. For men? Salted caramel with milk chocolate & malt crumb. For women? Strawberry rose with white choc & raspberry dust. Even better together.’

Fairfax Media reported one critic labelled the new release as ‘tone deaf’ while another said ‘OF COURSE the women get a pink fruity one. I’m shocked the men’s isn’t rum or some s***’.

A Pidapipo spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia they decided to delete the post because it was ‘creating confusion’.

‘Pidapipo were one of the catering suppliers that were engaged be part of the Net-a-Porter Spring Fashion event on Thursday evening,’ the spokesperson said.

‘We were briefed to create two distinct gelato flavours to represent the unique Mr Porter and Net-a-Porter brands (male and female online shopping websites) to be enjoyed by all the guests who attended the event.

‘We removed an instagram post about the event because it was creating confusion as to the intent of the creative collaboration.

‘We love creating delicious gelato to be enjoyed by everyone and if the collaboration gave the wrong impression we are sorry.’

On Monday, the gelateria apologised for the move, adding they decided to delete the post because the announcement had 'created confusion'

On Monday, the gelateria took to social media to apologise for the move.

‘We absolutely didn’t intend for them to be interpreted as gender specific,’ the post read.

‘The gelato flavours were designed to be consumed by everyone who attended the event.

‘We recognise the concept and post were not thought out well and we are truly sorry for this confusion and any offence this may have caused.

‘Pidapipo make gelato for everyone to enjoy – we believe it’s the right of everyone to eat whatever gelato they want… whenever they want.’

But many jumped to the defence of the gelato bar, with many saying: ‘People need to get over this gender thing’

Unimpressed with the apology, one person commented: ‘The fact is you got on board with the idea and used it as content. Don’t pretend like you had no idea your product was being used this way.’

But many jumped to the defence of the beloved gelato bar, with some saying: ‘People need to get over this gender thing’.

‘You can’t choose your age or race, biology has it you are born a gender. Don’t take it out on lovely people who do their best to make people happy with ice cream,’ one said.

Another posted: ‘It’s outrageous that people feel the need to criticise you for this. The world had gone mad. No apology necessary. Keep making amazing gelato!’

Another said: ‘You have absolutely nothing to be sorry about. Don’t succumb to these political correct idiots! They will forever find something to complain about.’

And another wrote: ‘Do not apologise to the sad, lonely dolts. They will want ladies wear and menswear to be non gender specific next.’
