The Pittsburgh Steelers have asked about a possible trade for Trevor Lawrence, the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, in what would be a blockbuster move as the franchise hunts for its new signal caller.

That’s according to Ryan Burr of the Big 10 network, who claims he was told about the move ‘from the horse’s mouth in Jags organization’.

At present, the Steelers are in an uncertain position when it comes to quarterback. Both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson played there last season, with Fields starting the role before Wilson replaced him after overcoming a calf issue.

But both men are now out of contract, which has now seemingly led the Steelers to making a big call to an AFC rival.

The Jaguars took Lawrence with the first pick of the 2021 after his college career with Clemson Tigers.

According to Burr, the Steelers would consider giving their first and second round picks from this year’s Draft to the Jaguars, who are in a rebuilding phase under new head coach Liam Coen.

But next year’s first round pick will not be on the table, Burr suggested, because Pittsburgh is hosting the 2026 Draft.

The Steelers made the playoffs this season but were beaten by the Baltimore Ravens.

Both Wilson and Fields have hinted that they would like to remain in Pittsburgh but the apparent move to sound out Lawrence’s availability suggests Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would prefer to move on.

The Jags, meanwhile, ended the year with a 4-13 record in the AFC South but finished the season without Lawrence.

When Coen was unveiled as the team’s new head coach, he underlined his plans that involved Lawrence as the main man.

‘This will all be about Trevor,’ he said. ‘How do we make Trevor Lawrence and this offense as dynamic and explosive as we can be? We have got build it around him.

‘I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and his work ethic more than I do already.’

The 25-year-old Lawrence got concussed after getting hit on the head by controversial Houston Texans linebacker Azzez Al-Shaair as he was sliding. Al-Shaair was suspended for three games for the incident.

Before he was concussed, Lawrence was also battling with a sprained AC joint on his left shoulder – his non-throwing arm.

He had surgery in December to correct the issue with Coen’s predecessor, Doug Pederson, saying the procedure went well.

Pederson added that Lawrence was expected to take part in offseason team activities ahead of the 2025 campaign.
