  • Jet2 was landing but onlookers believe it aborted maneuver to swoop away
  • They claim it narrowly avoided a TUI jet taking off from runway at same time

Nail-biting footage shows two planes ‘nearly collide’ at Birmingham Airport.

Plane spotters were shocked to see what appeared to be a dramatic near-miss on Sunday as a Jet2 flight from Majorca and a TUI jet came within 500ft of each other.

The Jet2 was landing but onlookers believe it aborted the maneuver to swoop away and narrowly avoid the TUI jet, which was taking off.

Footage shows the two planes flying off in opposite directions after the apparent close call.

A shocked bystander can be heard saying in the video ‘Look he’s turning, he’s circling’ as the Jet2 appeared to pull away from the runway in an aborted landing.

She then shouts ‘Oh my god, look! How close is that?’ as the TUI jet takes off very close by.

One Twitter user, who said she was on the Jet2 plane, wrote: ‘I hope the person in tower got a severe telling off could have been so much worse. Well done to the Jet2 captain’.

Birmingham Airport said that the event was actually a ‘controlled manoeuvre’.

A spokesman for the airport said: ‘We understand why the footage may cause concern but this was a controlled manoeuvre in line with standard procedures for a go around.

‘It not unusual to see it at busy airports.’
