Plane overshoots a runway in Micronesia and crash lands in the ocean – but all 47 passengers and crew miraculously survive

A plane has crash landed in the ocean after overshooting the runway.

En route to Micronesia, local authorities confirmed the airliner missed the runway and landed in the Pacific Ocean around 9.30am Friday local time.

Miraculously, the 36 passengers and 11 crew members are all reportedly safe.

Chuuk airport manager Jimmy Emilio told local media outlets the Air Niugini plane overshot the runway by about 160metres.

It’s currently unclear what caused the crash.

Micronesia is a country spread across the western Pacific Ocean comprising more than 600 islands, located north of Papua New Guinea. 

Papua New Guinea Accident Investigation Commission is currently preparing a team to investigate the site of the accident.

Videos posted to social media show rescue boats attending the scene, helping passengers and crew off of the half-submerged wreckage to safety.
