EasyJet flights between London Gatwick and southern France were cancelled this morning after a cargo plane overshot the runway and finished nose-down in a lake.

The airport at Montpellier, on the Mediterranean coast, has been closed until further notice. 

Rescuers pulled three people out of the Boeing 737. They were unharmed in the accident, which took place before dawn today.

An investigation is underway and the airport is shut indefinitely, authorities confirmed.

The West Atlantic plane had travelled from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Montpellier in the early hours today, arriving shortly before 3am.

But the journey ran anything but smoothly, with the jet ultimately landing its front in the water beyond the runway.

Four members of France’s air investigations team are attending the site, officials confirmed.

EasyJet confirmed its morning flights between London Gatwick and the popular seaside town were cancelled.

The budget airline wrote: ‘This is due to a non-easyJet aircraft incident at Montpellier airport.’

This evening’s flights are shown to be operating as normal, The Independent reported.

Domestic flights to and from Paris were also affected by the unexpected travel chaos.
