The ongoing debate about airplane etiquette has been taken to a new level after an irate passenger launched a new discussion about whether or not it’s OK to spread out on a flight.
A Reddit user named Emily Kauai, from Florida, left many people on the web divided after she shared a photo of herself completely squished in her seat because the man sitting next to her had opened up his legs so wide that they spilled into her area.
In the picture, which was posted to the app earlier this month under the thread Well That Sucks, the unidentified man could be seen sitting with his limbs spread apart on a recent Southwest Airlines flight.
His left leg went far beyond his seat space and into Emily’s, leaving her to sit with her legs pressed close together – and her post sparked a huge argument about whether or not his actions were acceptable.

‘This was how my entire four hour flight went today,’ the Florida resident captioned the post. ‘I am a five-foot-eight-inch female’

The man could be seen watching a movie on his phone in the picture, seemingly unaware of the fact that his position had left Emily with very little leg room.
In the comment section, Emily explained that she did ask the man to move over on more than one occasion, but she said he would close his legs but slowly return to the position over time.
‘A couple of times I mentioned it to him, and he would move over,’ she wrote. ‘But his legs would casually return to where they rested during his movie.’
Airplane etiquette has been a hot topic of discussion recently and her post quickly went viral – gaining more than 1,200 comments in a matter of days.
Some were quick to slam the man – calling him ‘disrespectful’ and ‘rude’ for spreading out on the flight – while others defended him, explaining that there’s no room for someone of his size to comfortably rest his legs.
‘There simply isn’t room for people with longer legs unless we do the splits like this,’ one person wrote, while another added, ‘It’s absolutely horribly uncomfortable.’

Other commenters pointed out that Emily should not have to suffer because he is too big for the seat
Some people put the blame on the airline, saying it was Southwest’s fault for not giving passengers more leg room
Someone else said: ‘A lot of people think it’s so disrespectful to do stuff like this, or to be tall in a movie theater and whatnot, but oftentimes we don’t have a choice.
‘I’m not exactly well-off and I can’t just go buying comfort+ or whatever every time I have a flight.’
Other commenters pointed out that Emily should not have to suffer because he is too big for the seat.
‘People like this suck. I would have said something,’ read a different comment. ‘To everyone saying tall people, I get that. But it’s the space she paid for and not her fault.
‘If I want more leg room I get a seat with extra leg room or suck it up. I’m six-foot-three and don’t do this.’
‘This photo makes me angry on [the original poster’s] behalf. People should have some basic self-awareness and courtesy,’ slammed someone else.
‘Flying sucks, don’t make it suckier!’ agreed another person.
Some people put the blame on the airline, saying it was Southwest’s fault for not giving passengers more leg room.
‘I don’t see a win for either person. It doesn’t appear the guy can get his legs forward either. This is the airline’s fault, not the passengers,’ a different user wrote.
Back in October, a Reddit user went viral after he revealed he had refused to give up his extra-legroom chair on a 10-hour flight to a mother who wanted to sit next to her husband
In addition, another Reddit user launched a debate last year after she revealed the passenger behind her had taken their shoes off and stuck them under her seat into her area
A similar situation gained attention in May, when an Instagram user posted a video of a passenger sticking their bare foot through the gap between the side of the plane and the seats
‘Everyone has too little room in a plane, so I try to blame not these kind people, but the airlines,’ someone else commented.
Another person added: ‘Although rude, this is a classic example of bad design. There really shouldn’t be planes that are built to squeeze people like this – if each seat was wider I doubt we would see stories like this quite as often. So yes, rude of this guy, but the real culprit is the airline.’
Many people have been discussing the acceptable way to act on a plane in recent weeks.
Back in October, a Reddit user who goes by Bratster22 went viral after he revealed he had refused to give up his extra-legroom chair on a 10-hour flight to a mother who wanted to swap so that she and her young son could sit next to her husband.
His post launched a major argument about whether or not he was wrong for not making the change, and it encouraged many others to speak out about similar situations.
In addition, Reddit user Brownshout launched a debate last year after she revealed the passenger behind her had taken their shoes off on a plane ride and stuck them under her seat into her area.
A similar situation gained attention in May, when an Instagram user posted a video of a passenger sticking their bare foot through the gap between the side of the plane and the seats in front of them.
