PLAYER RATINGS: Rodrygo double key to Real Madrid win at Chelsea as Trevoh Chalobah pays for error

Despite putting up a battling performance, Chelsea were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday night following a 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid.

It means the Blues lost the quarter-final tie 4-0 on aggregate and condemns them to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions under interim manager Frank Lampard.

Chelsea threatened early on in west London and were arguably the better and more confident team in the first half.

However, a double from Rodrygo soon put an end to Chelsea’s Champions League hopes to all but end their hopes of finishing a wretched campaign on a high.

Here is how both sets of players rated at Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid eventually held their nerve to defeat Chelsea 2-0 and progress 4-0 on aggregate

CHELSEA (3-4-1-2)

Kepa Arrizabalaga – Produced two decent saves in the first half to ensure Chelsea hung in with a fighting chance. 6.5

Trevoh Chalobah – It was going well for the central defender until his missed lunge on Rodrygo led to Real’s decisive goal. 5.5

Thiago Silva – Belongs on the biggest stage and looked anything but a 38-year-old in the twilight of his career. 7

Wesley Fofana – Lacked conviction in possession at times and copped an earful from coach Ashley Cole for venturing too far forward in the first half. 6.5

Reece James – All the talk before the game was about how he’d cope with Vini Jr. In reality it was Vini Jr and Camavinga dealing with James for much of the night. 7

Enzo Fernandez – The best is yet to come from the Argentine World Cup winner but it is clear to see why Chelsea paid over £100m for his services. Always available, never hid. 6.5

Mateo Kovacic – Kept things ticking away nicely in Chelsea’s engine room but couldn’t prevent his former club from progressing 6.5

Marc Cucurella – Tentative down Chelsea’s left and squandered a glorious opportunity just before half-time – much to his manager’s frustration. Booked. 6

N’Golo Kante – Deployed in an advanced midfield role, the Frenchman was another who didn’t have his shooting boots on, missing two excellent chances. 6

Conor Gallagher – Bursting with energy and enthusiasm but didn’t impact the game from a attacking perspective in the way he would have wanted. 6.5

Kai Havertz – The only recognised out-and-out attacker in the Chelsea starting XI but couldn’t unlock Madrid’s stubborn defence. 6.5

Subs: Felix 6.5 (Gallagher 65); Sterling 6 (Enzo 65); Mudryk 6 (Cucurella 66); Mount (Havertz 77)

Subs not used: Mendy, Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Mount, Zakaria, Ziyech, Azpilicueta, Chukwuemeka, Hall

Frank Lampard –Should take positives from this performance but it is no four defeats in four games since his return. 6.5

REAL MADRID (4-3-3)

Thibaut Courtois – Booed and abused the entire night – but produced a crucial save to deny Cucurella as the Belgian secured the last laugh. 7

Dani Carvajal – The unsung hero of this Real Madrid side. Solid in defence and more than capable in the attacking third. 7

Eder Militao – A master of the dark arts and the defender put the full repertoire to use here at Stamford Bridge to ease Madrid over the line. 7.5

David Alaba – Lasted just 45 minutes before making way for former Chelsea cult hero Antonio Rudgier, who was afforded a welcome return by fans. 6

Eduardo Camavinga – Played his part in an electric and bruising battle with James down Madrid’s left-hand side – all in an unfamiliar position. What a talent. 7

Fede Valverde – A passenger at times as Chelsea seized control of midfield for large portions of the game. But his discipline was key an assisted Real’s second. 6.5

Toni Kroos – What a footballer this guy is. Pass, pass, pass. Plays the game like he has time to kill. 8

Luka Modric – An uncharacteristic loose pass early on nearly opened the door to Chelsea but the Croat was faultless after that. 7

Rodrygo – Unlocked Chelsea’s resistance in the second half with a searing surge beyond Chalobah before prodding home the mood killer, Added a second for good measure. 8.5

Karim Benzema – The Ballon d’Or winner was strangely subdued but he won’t care too much as he prepares for another Champions League semi final. 6

Vinicius Jr – Put the ball on a plate for Rodrygo to score Real’s crucial goal but was given plenty to think about defensively by James. 7

Subs: Lunin, Lopez, Vallejo, Hazard, Asensio, Odriozola, Vazquez, Tchouameni, Ceballos, Rudiger, Diaz

Carlo Ancelotti – The coolest man at Stamford Bridge as he watched his team book yet another place in the Champions League final four. 7.5

Referee: Daniele Orsato – 6
