Karolina Pliskova powered past Garbine Muguruza in exactly one hour to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals. 

The No 7 seed will face either Simona Halep or Serena Williams in the last eight – and on this basis can give both a difficult challenge. 

Pliskova brushed her Spanish opponent aside 6-3, 6-1 in the Melbourne sunshine as she seeks a first Grand Slam title.

After falling a break down to the No 18 seed in the opening set, the Czech player upped her game and eventually proved far too strong.

In total, Pliskova hit 23 winners and five aces to wow the Margaret Court Arena, and earn her eighth win in 10 meetings with Muguruza.

Pliskova got better and better throughout the match – she won the final four games in quick succession, dropping just two points.

The former world No 1 has not reached a Grand Slam semi-final since the 2017 French Open, but on this form, Halep or Williams will do well to stop her.
