Pogba needs to watch himself back to improve – Lampard

Paul Pogba needs to start watching where he is going wrong if he is to improve, according to former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

Pogba has struggled for form recently and there have been suggestions of a rift between him and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

He was brought off by Mourinho in the 1-0 defeat by Newcastle in the Premier League after a poor performance.

Lampard believes Pogba must start to analyse where he is making errors as well as being more defensively responsible.

He said: ‘He’ s very talented player. Nine assists is good. He’s short on goals slightly but I’m not sure. Obviously the injuries affect you but in the games I’ve seen recently it’s defensive awareness that would be my problem.

‘I think maybe we’re mixing it up with maybe he should be in a two or maybe he should be in a three.

‘But when you play big games… Tottenham recently, Champions League if he plays tomorrow night, you have to have defensive responsibility whether you’re in a two or whether you’re in a three. That’s your best and then go forward and create because he certainly has the ability to create.

‘[He needs to] work it. watch games back, watch yourself, work in training, work on your relationship with the people around you. If anything if you’re not sure about it protect areas and get in the right position as early as you can. From then he’s so athletic he can arrive as many times and create goals.’

United’s record signing missed the FA Cup fifth round win over Huddersfield at the weekend but is expected to return to the first team for the Champions League last-16 first leg against Sevilla.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, however, feels the 24-year-old should be mature enough to take on instructions and know when he is making mistakes.

Gerrard added: ‘I think he should know that now. I think he’s at that age at where he should be mature enough to take Mourinho’s messages on board. To play in a team like Manchester United… yeah go forward and create your damage but you have to defend and you have to work hard and run about.’

Rio Ferdinand, who played for United for 12 years, says Pogba shouldn’t let his £89million price tag stop him from asking others for help.

Ferdinand said: ‘I think he needs help sometimes. Just because you’re worth so much amount of money you still need to learn and you need people around you.

‘I’d say he’d be having the conversations with the manager because I think that’s how Mourinho works.

‘At Juventus he had Chiellini, Bonucci behind him, Pirlo, people that would have been dictating to him and pulling him around and telling him where to be and that’s what I think he’s lacking at Manchester United. Sometimes you need people behind you to conduct and put you in positions to protect.’
