Police close M1 both directions causing five-mile queues

  • Police closed the M1 in both directions after a suspicious package was found

Police have closed the M1 in both directions after a suspicious package was found under a motorway bridge.  

The incident has caused long tailbacks between junction 15 for Northampton and junction 14 for Milton Keynes.

Thames Valley Police officers are at the scene, and the discovery was made beneath a motorway bridge around 7.30am today.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area as the road is expected to be closed ‘for some time,’ according to police. 

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews are also at the scene.

Stricken motorists have taken to social media to share their frustration at being caught up in the tailbacks this morning. 

National Express says 45 minutes is being added to travel times and coaches are being diverted from the area, as traffic stretches back some five miles.
