Police horse refuses to work without a tea to get him out of bed

One sugar lump or two? Police horse Jake refuses to start his shift without a big mug of tea to get him out of bed

  • Jake the horse has been serving with Merseyside Police force for 15 years
  • Trots over to officers and tries to steal their tea – so they make him his own mug
  • Police say they’ve ‘learnt how the 20-year-old horse takes his morning brew’

Many of us struggle to start the working day without our cup of tea or coffee in the morning – and one police horse is no different.

Jake the 20-year-old horse, who has been serving with Merseyside Police for the past 15 years, has picked up a love for sugary tea.

After sticking his tongue in his rider’s cup every day, members of the Merseyside Police Mounted Section now include Jake in their tea round.

Officers say Jake will even wait in his stable in Allerton, Liverpool, for his special big mug to be brought to him before starting the day.

Jake takes his tea with skimmed milk, two heaped teaspoons of sugar and a little cold water mixed in so it isn’t too hot.

Merseyside Police Mounted Section manager and trainer Lindsey Gaven said: ‘Jake is one of twelve horses we’ve got at the stable working with us.

‘I’d definitely describe Jake as a horse with a lot of character. We’ve all learnt his tea order – he’ll deal with one sugar, but is definitely happier when you remember to give him two.

‘If you’re at the side of the stable and he sees you with a mug in your hand, you can guarantee he’ll trot on over to try and steal a slurp.’
