Terrifying moment policeman holds a gun to the head of an armed suspect and smash in the windscreen of a ‘stolen car’ after dramatic chase through Sydney peak-hour traffic

A man has been pinned to the ground by armed police after officers used force to remove him from a stolen vehicle in the middle of a busy highway.

Multiple officers were called to the Princes Highway in Gymea, in the Sutherland Shire, in Sydney’s south, about 6pm on Friday night after reports the driver had a machete and access to a firearm. 

The driver of the stolen vehicle was arrested at gun point at the scene after multiple police pursuits.

In the footage a police office can be seen smashing the windshield with a baton as another officer aims a gun at the person inside.

The road was shut down while the arrest was made. 

A police statement said officers had begun following the stolen vehicle after reports the vehicle was stolen. 

A police chase was sparked when the vehicle failed to stop near the Southgate Shopping Centre.

However, due to the manner in which the stolen Holden Trax was being driven, the pursuit was called off.

Police continued to follow the vehicle until it was involved in a collision with a police vehicle.

The Holden driver was arrested and has been taken to Sutherland Hospital for assessment.

The male and female police officers involved in the crash were also treated for minor injuries.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Road closures are in place as police inquiries into the incident continue. 

Officers have urged anyone with dash cam footage or images of the incident to contact Sutherland Police.
