A video of a police officer being ‘punched, bitten and slammed against a parked car’ in a violent attack has emerged. 

Footage filmed from a nearby window shows a man charging at the officer and wrestling with him at around 1am on Thursday 27 December in Hero Street, Bootle in Merseyside. 

After throwing a barrage of punches, the assailant slams the officers body against a parked car on the street.

The officer appears to use a baton to defend himself before a member of the public bravely intervenes and pulls the men apart.  

At this point the attacker throws a volley of punches at the officer who staggers back before sirens can be heard as police arrive at the scene.  

Police said the officer was punched and bitten on the hand. He was taken to hospital for treatment after the violent attack but was later discharged.

A spokesman said: ‘Merseyside Police are investigating an allegation of assault on an officer which is reported to have happened on Hero Street, Bootle.

‘The incident was reported to us shortly after 1am on Thursday 27 December.

‘Police were called to a residential property following reports that there was an ongoing dispute. 

‘On police arrival, after trying to defuse the situation, one officer was assaulted which resulted in him being punched and receiving bite injuries to his hand. He was taken to hospital for examination and has since been discharged.’

Police confirmed a man had been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker and common assault of an emergency worker.

He has been released on conditional bail until January 25 where he will appear at Liverpool Crown court.
