Police officers have been slammed for performing a dance routine to the Bee Gees’ hit Stayin’ Alive, as they urged people to stay at home last night during the coronavirus lockdown.

Sandbach Police in Cheshire received hundreds of complaints after they tweeted footage of four officers gyrating in front of three marked cars with their blue lights flashing.

The officers could be seen swinging their hips to the classic 1977 hit with hand-washing motions alongside the caption: ‘This Saturday Night avoid the fever; stay home to be Stayin’ Alive #StayHomeStaySafe #SandbachDoStayinAlive.’

But the Saturday Night Fever rendition drew huge criticism online, with Twitter users questioning if the dance routine is an ”essential reason’ for being outdoors’.

Four police officers, from Cheshire Constabulary, were slammed by the public after performing a dance routine to Stayin’ Alive in an attempt to urge people to stay indoors

One Twitter user ranted: ‘I can feel my taxes being p****d down the drain. Why not solve some crimes as all the criminals are all at home waiting to be caught?’

Another vented: ‘Who in their right mind would think of this nonsense let alone approve it and publish it. The police at all levels are truly unfit for purpose.’

One said she was ‘offended’ by the video and added: ‘I’m reading daily of people being broken into or assaulted waiting days for a call back let alone a visit.

‘Yet we get synchronised dancing in uniform! No wonder people have lost respect.’

‘Appreciate the message,’ another commented, ‘but this is not helping one rule for them, how can we respect the police if they look like they’re mocking us?’

One said: ‘Just when you start to have an ounce of respect again for the police, they put this out, wtf.’

Another ranted: ‘And they wonder why many people will not take the #coronavirus emergency seriously.’

Twitter users complained of the dance routine and branded the footage as 'cringe' last night

Another added: ‘What a great use of everybody’s time. Three cars. Four officers.

‘God knows how many office staff to upload this nonsense. So glad I have paid for this.’

Another user went further, saying: ‘Everyone involved in making this video should be fired.’

And Mark Lloyd said: ‘Is this an ‘essential reason’ for being outdoors? Not setting the best example. No wonder nobody ever answers 101.’

Cheshire Police have been contacted for comment.
