Police search for gunman after fifth man is shot dead in Melbourne

Gunman is on the run in Melbourne after a man becomes the fifth person to be shot dead in the city in ten days

A man has been shot and killed in Melbourne, marking the fifth shooting death in the city in ten days.

The victim, who has not been identified, died in Springvale, 23km southeast of central Melbourne, right before midnight on Sunday.

Emergency responders arrived at Springvale Road following reports of a single gunshot, but were unable to revive the man. 

Police are now searching for the gunman who is still at large.

The death comes days after a 30-year-old man shot dead outside a Kensington boxing match.  Two men have been arrested in connection to the killing, while two others remain on the run.

Previous shootings were in Kensington, Dandenong and Meadow Heights.

Forensic police remain at the scene and Springvale Road has been closed to traffic.
