Polish butcher pleads not guilty to sex act in Libby Squire’s street

The Polish butcher arrested on suspicion of abducting Libby Squire has been charged with performing a sex act on himself in the street and burgling a nearby house for sex toys and knickers just days before she vanished, a court heard today.

Pawel Relowicz, 24, a married father-of-two, appeared at Hull Magistrates Court and pleaded not guilty to voyeurism, burglary and outraging public decency.

It comes as police cordoned off an area of her local park close to what is believed to be a derelict boathouse as part of their ongoing investigation into Libby’s disappearance.

The Hull student, 21, vanished after a drunken night out in the East Yorkshire city ten days ago and was last seen on a bench near her house on January 31.

Relowicz, who moved to the UK from Poland five years ago, was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of abducting her. Police say today’s court appearance is unrelated – but he remains a suspect after being bailed last night.

The Humberside bacon factory worker was swept into court in a prison van today where he faced five charges dating back to Christmas 2017 up until the eve of the student’s disappearance last month.

The charges include pleasuring himself on Wellesley Avenue, Hull, on January 19 this year – 12 days before Libby was last seen.

It is also alleged Relowicz burgled a house near his family home in Raglan Street between January 25 and January 28 this year and stole sex toys, condoms, knickers and photographs from inside.

As the search for philosophy student Miss Squire entered its 11th day officers have been searching his home using heat-seeking infra-red cameras while zoning in on her local park including a large pond as they hunt for clues about her whereabouts.

Her bereft parents Lisa and Russ, from High Wycombe, are in Hull anxiously waiting for news and attended a church vigil in the city last night.

What has Pawel Relowicz been charged with?

· Between December 7 and December 10, 2017,  he allegedly entered a property in Raglan Street and stole three vibrators

· Between December 1 and December 4, 2017, in Hull, namely Lambton Street, he entered as a trespasser and stole a PlayStation 4 console, a controller and £25 in cash

· On January 23, 2018, in Edgecumbe Street he observed another person doing a private act knowing that person did not consent to being observed for your sexual gratification

· On January 19, 2019, in a public place namely Wellesley Avenue, he committed an act outraging public decency by behaving in an indecent manner by performing a sex act in a public place

· Between January 25 and January 28, 2019, he entered as a trespasser in Ventnor Street and stole a computer laptop, a Kindle, a speaker, a quantity of sex toys, condoms, knickers and photographs

The three counts of burglary from December 2017 to January 2019 relate to accusations he stole sex toys, vibrators and condoms from properties in Hull.

Relowicz, of Raglan Street in Hull, is also accused of committing an act outraging public decency by performing a sex act on himself in a public place on January 19, 2019.

On January 23, 2018, Relowicz allegedly observed another person doing a private act knowing that person had not consented for his own sexual gratification.

Relowicz stood in the dock throughout the hearing wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Speaking through a Polish interpreter, he confirmed his name, address, date of birth and not guilty pleas to the five charges.

Members of the media filled the two rows of seats in the public gallery and stood crowded at the back of the courtroom.

Bill Waddington, representing Relowicz, said he would not be making a bail application for his client.

District Judge Fred Rutherford told the defendant: ‘You have entered your not guilty pleas before this court.

‘The matters are too serious for this court and will be sent to Crown Court. You are remanded in custody to Hull Crown Court.’

Relowicz was remanded in custody and will appear at Hull Crown Court on March 11.

Libby suspect’s mother tells MailOnline: ‘I’m devastated’

Pawel Relowicz’s mother Marzena was left devastated after being told her son was remanded in custody on sex charges and burglary.

The mother of eight said she was desperate to travel to England to see her son, but said she could not afford the air fare.

‘I so want to see Pawel to find out what has been going on. I want to go to England, but do not have the money’, she said.

‘I was told by my daughter we had to get £2,000 for bail money but we do not even have those means. I do not have that money.

Marzena, 52, said she had only spoken briefly to her daughter in law since her son’s arrest on suspicion of abducting student Libby Squires.

‘When I ask her how Pawel is and what is happening she just tells me it is fine. I do not know any more, I am in the dark.’

Speaking at the family home in the village of Warszewice, Marzena said she did not understand why her son was charged with voyeurism and public indecency.

‘I am a Catholic. I do not understand what he has done.’

She added:  ‘It’s the first time in my life I have even heard of someone doing something like that. I have children, I know what they get up to, never in my life did I see anything like that in my son.

That’s not my boy. I don’t recognize anything about that behaviour.

He had a girlfriend, he got married and has children, why would he do that? I’m in shock. ‘

Last night his mother, Marzena Relowicz, 52, told MailOnline: ‘I don’t know what to say, I am just speechless. Why are they keeping him jail? There is something wrong here. I just do not understand this and it is all too much to take in.’

Humberside Police said ‘a 24-year-old man’ – known to be Relowicz – remained ‘of interest to the investigation’ over Libby’s disappearance but has not been charged.

MailOnline informed his mother that her son had been charged with the offences.

Relowicz had been held for 96 hours by police investigating the disappearance of Libby – the maximum amount of time allowed before charges were brought or he was released.

Earlier, Mrs Relowicz, speaking at the family home in the village of Warszewice, Poland said she had to take medication because she was so stressed by the arrest of her son.

Marzena had insisted he son could not have been involved with the disappearance of the 21 year old student from near her home in Hull, saying: her son ‘is no killer’.

Mrs Relowicz said she had been told that her son had offered a girl a lift in his silver Vauxhall Astra on the night Libby went missing.

‘Pawel was driving home and saw a girl crying,’ she said.

‘He had given her a lift as she wanted to go home. He had put her address into his satnav system.

‘I know in my heart that Pawel did not do anything to this girl. He is a good boy who respects women and would not do anything to harm anyone.’

In a tearful interview, the devout Catholic said: ‘If something isn’t right, God forbid, then there must be punishment.’

Mrs Relowicz, 52, insisted her son was not capable of harming Miss Squire, 21.

High-tech cameras were used to search outbuildings in Hull near the home of the philosophy student.

Placing a hand on her heart, she said: ‘My son Pawel did not abduct that girl. I would rather die than know he is guilty. My heart is breaking over this and I feel so sad for the girl’s parents and what they are going through.

‘I can’t imagine their pain. I desperately hope they find her alive.’

The investigation into Miss Squire’s disappearance took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when police arrested Mr Relowicz at the rented home in Hull where he lives with his wife and two young children.

At 11pm the night she disappeared, Libby was refused entry at Welly Club nightclub around two miles from her home and put into a taxi by her friends.

At 11.30pm was dropped off by the taxi but did not go inside her home and at 11.45pm Libby was last seen sitting on a bench around the corner on Beverley Road.

Detectives think Libby stayed in the area for about half an hour and was wandering the streets near her student digs.

At 12.30pm a neighbour said that they were woken up by a ‘blood-curdling scream’.

High-tech cameras were used to search outbuildings in Hull near the home of the philosophy student.

The infra-red cameras are capable of detecting people who are obscured by cover and are equipped with a microphone to hear hidden subjects.

And neighbours were quizzed by detectives who handed them a form with seven questions to complete.

Detective Superintendent Matt Hutchinson said: ‘We are continuing to investigate the disappearance of Libby Squire and a 24-year-old man remains of interest to the investigation.

‘Our priority remains to find Libby and support her family at this incredibly distressing time.’
