Politician caught looking at a photo of Borat in a mankini during a parliamentary debate

An MP has been caught on video looking at a photo of cinematic character Borat as his colleague argued an important point in a parliamentary debate.

New South Wales Planning and Housing Minister Anthony Roberts was filmed showing off the printed picture of Borat in his ‘mankini’ to another colleague.

Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton was arguing against banning toxic PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam at the time, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

A spokesperson for Minister Roberts told Fairfax media the print out was an innocent jab by a friend of the minister. 

‘His mate sent him that photo saying, ‘This is how you will look at the beach’,’ the spokesman said. 

Sacha Baron Cohen made the character of Borat famous in the self titled 2006 film, with the image of Cohen in a green one piece ‘mankini’ synonymous with the film.

A number of people took to social media to give their own thoughts on the short video clip.

‘Oh. They’re all working so terribly hard. That’s why they get paid so much,’ one user wrote. 

‘They should leave them at door. Do the job your there for,’ another added. 

Another user pointed out how the timing of the moment could have been better. 

‘Glad to hear he is taking the debate seriously,’ the user posted.
