An Australian cheese has been removed from shelves after it was found to have a high level of E.coli.

The Queensland Department of Health alerted the public on Tuesday afternoon about the contaminated item: Blackall Gold Washed Rind 200gm.

Produced by Woombye Cheese Company, the recall affects the product Best Before October 10.

‘The recall is due to microbial contamination – high E.coli count,’ the statement said.

‘Food products contaminated with E.coli may cause illness if consumed.’

E.coli is a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning and can lead to life-threatening diseases. 

Consumers will be provided a full refund when they return the recalled product to the place of purchase. 

It has been available for sale around Queensland in fresh food markets, grocers and selected IGA stores.  

Queensland health and Woombye Cheese Company also urge concerned consumers to seek medical advice about their health. 

The Woombye Cheese Company is a one and a half hour drive from Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast. 

The family-owned company was founded in 2013 providing fresh and handcrafted cheeses all over the country.
