Port Adelaide star Ollie Wines wins the 2021 Brownlow Medal as he pips the award’s two favourites in extremely tense count

Ollie Wines won the 2021 Brownlow Medal just ahead of Marcus Bontempelli

Port Adelaide star Ollie Wines won the most competitive Brownlow medal in history, claiming his first medal with a staggering 36 votes ahead of Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli.

In the highest scoring top 5 in the award’s history, Wines stormed home to win his first medal just ahead of Bontempelli, Clayton Oliver and Sam Walsh.

Four players finished with 30+ votes, with the Brownlow previously only seeing two players reach that mark in the same season.

The medal completes a stunning comeback for the 26-year-old Wines who came back from a crippling shoulder injury last year to claim the award.

Melbourne’s Oliver and the Bulldogs’ Bontempelli were favourites for the award after stunning seasons that saw the pair carry their teams into the Grand Final.

Bontempelli was a single vote behind Wines heading into the final round where the two superstars played each other, with the Power midfielder taking two votes to his rival’s none.

The Bulldogs captain will instead turn his attention to Saturday evening’s Grand Final after thrashing Wines’ side in the preliminary final.
