The mother of three siblings who were killed in a house fire stumbled out of the burning building screaming for help before her children’s bodies were found.
Five-month-old Kelvin Hawke and his older siblings, seven-year-old Anand and 10-year-old Jamela, were stuck inside their Anderson Street home in Port Hedland, in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, on Tuesday afternoon as fire crews tried for 30 minutes to extinguish the out-of-control fire.
The children’s mother, Margaret Hawke, was taken to hospital under sedation after neighbours watched her run from the burning home with a cut on her face begging for someone to call an ambulance.
Dozens of neighbours rushed to the home in an attempt to help before emergency crews arrived, smashing in windows and using garden hoses in an attempt to rescue the children.
Ms Hawke has been described as a doting and loving mother. She was seen hugging and kissing the kids as she picked them up from school just hours before the inferno took hold.
‘Margy is a loving mother and never known to be anything other than that, a loving mother,’ one relative said.
‘She is gentle, loving, kind and great with the kids, a good mum.’

Acting WA Police deputy commissioner Allan Adams said a criminal investigation is underway.
‘The circumstances leading up to this tragedy will be subject to investigation,’ he said.
‘I don’t propose to go into the details of the family background at this time.’
The fathers of each of the children have been notified of their deaths.
Mr Adams said an investigation will take place to see if there was anything that could have been done to prevent the blaze.
‘The investigation will take time, obviously there is the potential criminal behaviour that we investigate but obviously with the death of three people, the coronial investigation will also look at a number of issues leading up to the incident to better understand if there were opportunities for this to be prevented,’ he said.
