A pregnant firefighter has hit back at critics who slammed her for risking her life to defend her community.

Katherine Robinson-Williams is 13 weeks pregnant and has been fighting the blazes at Taree on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.

‘If my home goes, it can be replaced. Homes can be rebuilt, people can’t be,’ the 23-year-old told 10Daily.

‘We’ve already lost too many people to these fires. I’m going to be there for my community as long as I’m able to.’

Despite the criticism, Ms Robinson Williams says she’s received support from people telling her it’s ‘your body, your choice’.

The volunteer firefighter said she plans to keep battling bushfires until she’s in the late stages of her pregnancy.

Ms Robinson-Williams followed in the footsteps of her mother who helped put out fires at the time she was pregnant with her in 1995.

She took to social media on Sunday to defend her decision to battle the flames and said she ‘refuses to stay behind’ while the fires continue to rage.

‘For all the females on the ground in NSW right now. We stand together we stand proud! Yes I am a firefighter,’ she wrote.

‘No I’m not a man. Yes I am a female. Yes I am pregnant. Yes I am going to the fires. And yes I’ll be alright. No I won’t just stay behind. No I don’t care if you don’t like it.’

‘THIS IS MY STATE IN FLAMES! I love my country I love my mates. And if that means I’m needed on the ground. Then I’ll always make the way.’

Some people criticised Ms Robinson-Williams after she shared her emotional post, saying she wasn’t taking proper precautions for her unborn baby.

‘I have cleared with my doctors and I wear a mask while on the ground, it’s safe for me to be there,’ she replied.

Ms Robinson-Williams lives in Paxton near Cessnock in NSW, which is an area at risk of being ravaged by the fires.

She will give birth to first child in May after she hosts a firefighter themed gender reveal party.
