A 40-year-old pregnant woman accused shoplifting at a Wisconsin store went into labor in front of stunned staff as she was caught by security.

The woman reportedly tried to walk out of Woodman’s Markets in Oak Creek with $255 worth of groceries on August 2, but was confronted by store security who called police.

Security took her into custody while waiting for police to arrive, but as they led the woman back into the store she went into labor, according to CBS 58.

She was then taken to the women’s bathroom for some privacy, and was taken to hospital shortly after where she delivered her child.

Some Woodman’s customers expressed sympathy for the woman.

Authorities in Oak Creek, Wisconsin said an unnamed would-be thief tried leaving Woodman’s Markets (pictured) with $255 in groceries she hadn’t paid for on August 2 before police were called

‘I don’t know if I would ever do that, but I don’t know, maybe it’s her circumstances, maybe she’s going through a rough time? You can never judge nobody because you don’t know what position they’re in,’ said Mini Avila of Oak Creek told WDJT.

Others said the woman’s circumstances don’t excuse her behavior.

‘You shouldn’t steal in the first place, so I don’t have any feelings about that,’ Oak Creek resident Lisa Meltesen said. ‘It was an event that happened, she went into labor, unfortunately at the same time, but no, you shouldn’t steal.

Authorities later mailed the woman a citation for retail theft.
