A Premium Bonds saver has won a £1million jackpot with a bond purchased almost 28 years ago in this month’s National Savings & Investments prize draw.

The winner hails from Nottingham and has a total £49,100 holding. The bond was bought in a month when Backstreet Boys topped the charts with As Long As You Love Me, and British film The Full Monty was dominating the box office.

It also marks the first time in more than a decade that a winner has won a £1million Premium Bonds prize with a bond this old.

In May 2014, a £1million prize winner scooped the top prize with a bond they purchased in September 1997. The winner was based in Gloucestershire.

While in the November 2016 prize draw, a winner won a £1million prize with a bond they purchased in November 1996, according to NS&I.

The other £1million winner in today’s draw was based in Norwich and held the maximum £50,000 holding. Their winning bond was purchased in June 2014.

It comes after NS&I announced it is cutting the Premium Bonds prize fund rate.

The prize fund rate, which represents the average return a Premium Bonds saver would receive throughout the year, will be slashed to 3.6 per cent from 3.8 per cent in the August draw next month.

NS&I said the rate cut reflects ‘the changing landscape for savings.’

The odds of winning a prize in the draw remain at 22,000 to 1, but it means there will be four fewer £100,000 prizes from August, down from 80 in today’s draw to 75.

NS&I has now chopped the rate on Premium Bonds – its most popular product – five times since it peaked at 4.65 per cent between September 2023 and March 2024, bringing the rate down to 3.6 per cent from next month’s draw.

Meanwhile, there will be 151 £50,000 prizes, down from 158 currently. There will be 15 fewer £25,000 prizes and 38 fewer £10,000 ones. The two £1million jackpot prizes remain.

There were more than 5.9million prizes drawn this month worth over £417million.
