President Nixon’s ‘Western White House’ hits the market with a $63.5million asking price

The San Clemente, California home that was used as President Richard Nixon’s ‘Western White House’ during his tumultuous five years in office is once again on the market. 

The seaside estate dubbed ‘La Casa Pacifica’ is currently for sale with an asking price of $63.5million. 

Its current owner, who bought the home from Nixon in the 1980s, has been trying to sell the property over the last several years, first putting it on the market in 2015 for $75million.

Nixon bought the 1926 home in 1969 for $1.4million, just six months into his presidency. During his administration, he hosted 17 heads of state at the mansion including Japanese Premier Eisaku Sato, South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. 

And it wasn’t just dignitaries that graced the home with their presence. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and Cesar Romero also made visits.

He wrote his memoirs in an office overlooking the ocean, and filmed the famous Frost-Nixon interviews not far away. 

He owned the home until 1980, at which point he sold it to political ally Gavin S. Herbert, the founder of the Allergan pharmaceuticals company.

Herbert has owned it ever since, and said he was so taken by the home that he tended to its gardens as a volunteer before buying it from Nixon.

He has expanded the home under his ownership, adding a basement and remodeling other parts.

Herbert told the Wall Street Journal in an April 2015 story that putting the house on the market was ‘a very hard decision’.

Current owner Herbert has tried to sell the home several times over the past three years 

Herbert told the Wall Street Journal in an April 2015 story that putting the house on the market was ‘a very hard decision’

The home is such a beauty that it has been featured in Architectural Digest three times

He said: ‘I think we felt we were caretakers. We care a lot about who the next caretakers would be.’

La Casa Pacifica is located on an isolated bluff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, offering panoramic views including San Clemente Island 60 miles away.
