President Trump criticized for Memorial Day message

President Donald Trump is being criticized for his self-congratulatory tone in a Memorial Day tweet in which he said ‘those who died for our great country’ would be proud of the work he has done so far as Commander in Chief.

‘Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!’ the tweet read.

Trump sent the tweet Monday before heading to Arlington National Cemetery to pay tribute to those who died in service to the U.S.

It was poorly received by power brokers in Washington, and average Americans across the country.

President Trump angered many with his Memorial Day tweet which focused on himself rather than those who had given their lives for the U.S.

‘Memorial Day is defined as “a day set aside in most states of the U.S. for observances in memory of dead members of the armed forces of all wars.” Not found: Economic reports,’ the website wrote.

Bill Kristol, editor-at-lkarge for the Weekly Standard, urged Americans to put the president’s tweet ‘out of mind’.

‘There are so many appropriate expressions of respect and appreciation on this Memorial Day that deserve your attention, and that reflect well on the country. Attend to them. Ignore Trump,’ he wrote.

Others found it hard to conceal their outrage though.

‘Do you think, just once, on what is supposed to be a day of solemn remembrance you could stop talking about yourself?’ a Twitter accounbt called BadPacifist wrote.

Many pointed out the fact that Trump managed to dodge the draft for the Vietnam War.

‘You have no idea what this holiday is about. You dodged the draft, insult POWs and Gold-Star families, and show no remorse for military lives lost on your watch,’ twitter user Joe Waddell wrote.
