Shay Mitchell is being mocked over her ‘ridiculous’ 58-step skincare routine that saw her using seven different masks at once – including a 24-karat gold one that she put on her boobs – to the tune of $2,200.
The Pretty Little Liars alum sat down with Vogue Magazine recently to film a ‘getting ready with me’ style video, and fans were shocked when she revealed that she uses more than 50 products – including multiple moisturizers, cleaners and serums, a $400 sculpting wand, and so many more.
The actress even revealed that she keeps an entire fridge in her bathroom – just so she can store some of her skin products in it and keep them cold.
‘There are quite a few steps, so stick with me,’ she warned viewers during the beginning of the 22-minute video.
‘If I have time, I really go full out with my skin care. Because why not? It feels good.’
The first thing Shay explained that she does every morning is wash her hands, and then, she uses a $38 Shani Darden skin cleansing serum – which she scrubs into her entire face. After that, she uses her $15 ESARORA ice roller, which she said ‘feels so nice.’

Over the top? When it became time for her to put on her face masks, fans felt she got a little ‘extreme’
The mom-of-one started with two under her eyes and one on her forehead. After that, she covered them with a full face mask, before adding another one to her chin
She added one more face mask over all of them, and finished the process with a 24-karat breast mask. Combined, all of the masks cost her $233
But when it became time for her to put on her face masks, fans felt she got a little ‘excessive.’ She started with two under her eyes and one on her forehead. After that, she covered them with a full face mask, before adding another one to her chin. Then, she put one more mask over her entire face, ‘to keep everything untucked.’
She explained, ‘The reason that I like [masks] is because I feel like they’re very hydrating. I put them on, I don’t have to think about it.’
‘I love the drama of it. I think they’re funny, I like to scare people when I’m traveling, especially. Or when I’m just at home.’
Finally, the mom-of-one finished the process with a 24-karat breast mask. Combined, all of the masks cost her $233.
‘Your boobs need love, too. Especially if you’re going to an event and have a low-cut dress,’ she added.
Fans took to the comment section of the video to share their thoughts on her ‘extreme’ use of masks, with one writing, ‘I’ve never laughed so hard during one of these. That whole mask thing is extreme.’
‘OMG! The face masks are a li’l crazy… You don’t need so many masks at one time,’ another viewer wrote. ‘One sheet mask is enough. All they do is hydrate. This is just waste… And we need to be responsible about creating so much waste.’
A third user commented, ‘I have to say being someone who knows skincare this is beyond excessive.’
Staying hydrated! Shay used a $32 Kiehl’s eye treatment and a $155 iS Clinical serum
Shay called her Basic Organics E-Ointment her ‘secret’ to success. She uses it to treat her melasma, which she developed during pregnancy
After that, the 34-year-old moved on to her moisturizers. This part included a $32 Kiehl’s eye treatment, a $155 iS Clinical serum, a $130 Tata Harper Illuminating moisturizer, $45 sunscreen, and what she called her ‘secret’ – Basic Organics E-Ointment.
Shay, who welcomed a daughter named Atlas Noa with her boyfriend, Matte Babel, in October 2019, explained that when she was pregnant, she developed something called melasma – a skin condition characterized by brown or blue-gray patches or freckle-like spots. And she said the Basic Organics E-Ointment – which is a Vitamin E wheat germ oil aloe vera – really helps with the spots.
‘I’d say my skin didn’t change that much when I was pregnant, except for the melasma. Thank you. It’s fine, just little reminders. My little gift,’ she said.
Throughout the process, the brunette beauty also revealed some of her beauty secrets. For example, she said she doesn’t like to eat any salt in the days before she has an event or a photo shoot because her ‘skin puffs up quite easily.’
She also explained that if she ever has a break out, she doesn’t like to cover it with a lot of makeup.
‘If my skin is going through a breakout I actually wear less makeup, I don’t even try to cover it,’ she said.
‘I’m like, “I don’t care what the world sees. I need my skin to heal for itself so I want it to breathe.” And then, I use less products, I use less makeup and I really just try to be super minimal with what I put on my skin so it can really heal itself.’
According to Shay, she is always on the hunt for new beauty products, especially when she travels to new places.
‘I always come home with a suitcase of new masks to try,’ she joked.
‘I love seeing with other people use. I always find that to be really interesting when I travel, getting a better sense of what they use, what they’ve grown up using and what their secrets are.’
After that, Shay moved on to her makeup. She started with Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty What It Dew Makeup Refreshing Spray, which costs $18.
‘I feel like if this is what Rihanna uses, and this is what gets her skin to glow… then I should probably also drink it. I’m kidding, I’m not gonna drink it. Don’t drink this. Spray it,’ she said.
The You star used three different concealers, a foundation, a face palette, a setting powder, bronzer, three different blushes, and a highlighter – all on her face.
Au-natural! When it comes to her makeup, Shay said she tries to ‘enhance what I have and work with it’ – rather than changing her looks

‘Makeup for me has always been really fun, I’ve never taken it too serious. ‘Cause I don’t know why you would,’ she said.
‘I feel like there’s some days where I don’t wear anything, and I just do my skin care and I walk out of the house and I feel pretty good about that too. But then there’s other days where you just want a little bit of a base.’
In the past, the star – who is Filipino – revealed that she had trouble with makeup artists understanding her skin tone.
‘Back in PLL days we’d be doing a press or a photo shoot and I’d work with a makeup artist I’ve never worked with before… I think my skin tone, maybe they weren’t used to working on it as much,’ she revealed.
‘I would never feel comfortable in my own skin when somebody new had done my makeup that I just didn’t vibe with or I felt like [didn’t] understand the color of my skin. It sucks. It sucks when somebody doesn’t have the colors that they need for your skin or don’t understand the undertones of it.’
As for her lips, she used an $18 Buxom Power Line Plumping lip liner, a $22 Elaluz Oil-Infused lip gloss and a $22 Kyle Cosmetics Koko K gloss.
She explained that she’s learned a lot of tips and tricks from social media, and that she tries to use makeup to enhance her features rather than change them.
‘With all the different tips and tricks that I’ve learned I really do just try to enhance what I have and work with it. And that’s what I think makes people really beautiful, when they just enhance what they were born with,’ she said.
Her go-to eyeshadow is Makeup By Mario’s Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette, which costs $48
Shay revealed that she lives by Benefit BADgal’s BANG! Volumizing Mascara, which costs $26
Enjoying the process: Shay said that she never takes her makeup too seriously and that she likes to keep it ‘fun’
For her eyes, the model used a $21 Kelly Baker eyebrow pencil, $48 Makeup By Mario eyeshadow palette, $34 Surratt Relevée lash curler, and a $26 Benefit BADgal BANG! mascara, among others.
She finished the entire thing with Cacharel Women’s Yes I Am Glorious perfume, which costs $35.
Some people felt the 58-step process was a little over the top, and the video was quickly flooded with comments like ‘this is on another level.’
‘She put all those masks on and wiped everything off and put on all those new moisturizer layers. The time… the effort…. the money…. Never seen a wasteful routine like this,’ one person wrote.
Another pointed out, ‘Most of the facial tools and products she used are used for the same purpose.’
‘Um anyone else get seriously stressed with the amount of steps she had… Just watching this has broke me out,’ a third YouTube user wrote.
‘Vogue and Shay have to be trolling us with this skin care routine. This is too ridiculous to be real. Nobody needs to do all of these steps, ever,’ one last comment read.
