Prince Harry pays tribute to Princess Diana’s ‘work ahead of 25th anniversary of her death

Prince Harry paid tribute to his mother Princess Diana ahead of the 25th anniversary of her death at a polo tournament in Colorado yesterday.

The Duke of Sussex, 37, said the day will be ‘filled with memories of her incredible work and love for the way she did it.’

He continued: ‘I want it to be a day to share the spirit of my mum with my family, with my children, who I wish could have met her. Every day, I hope to do her proud.’

Prince Harry made the moving remarks during a charity polo match benefitting his charity Sentebale. He was joined by his close friend Nacho Figueras, and his wife Delfina at the event.

The Duchess of Sussex, who this week launched her Spotify podcast Archetypes, did not attend.

Acknowledging the milestone, Harry said: ‘My dear friend Prince Seeiso and I founded Sentebale 16 years ago in honour of our mothers, with a mission to support many of the most vulnerable young people on the planet and to give them care and help so they can thrive.

‘In Sesotho, the language of the Basotho, the word ‘Sentebale’ means ‘forget-me-not’.

‘Next week is the 25th anniversary of my mother’s death, and she most certainly will never be forgotten. I want it to be a day filled with memories of her incredible work and love for the way that she did it.

‘I want it to be a day to share the spirit of my mum with my family, with my children, who I wish could have met her. Every day, I hope to do her proud.

‘She was tireless in her work to support and destigmatise those experiencing HIV and AIDS.

‘Fittingly, her favourite flowers were forget-me-nots. I hope we can remember my mother’s legacy by recommitting to those that we serve, whoever and wherever that may be.’

The Duke of Sussex’s Sentebale Team won the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup in Aspen, Colorado on Thursday – due in large part to the 37 year-old royal’s horseback skills.

Harry joined his friend and teammate Nacho Figueras for the tournament, which saw Sentebale take on multiple other teams.

A commentator watching the game praised Harry’s skills, saying: ‘He went coast to coast, like buttered toast,’ Hello! magazine reported.

Harry was also seen laughing after missing a goal, but it all came good in the end for the Duke – who accepted a prize on behalf of his teammates.

Harry played to raise funds and awareness for his charity of the same name, which helps children and adolescents in Africa come to terms with their HIV diagnosis.

The prince, who is currently living in his $14 million mansion in California having stepped back from royal duty, was joined by his longtime friend and the charity’s ambassador: Argentine polo player Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Figueras.

Figueras has played polo alongside Prince Harry, in various matches over the years, attended the royal wedding and was among the first to meet his son Archie in 2019.
