Prince William pines after Kate Middleton as The Crown recreates the couple’s romance as students

The Crown will show Prince William pining after Kate Middleton as filming for the final season continues at the royal couple’s old university.

The sixth season of the hit Netflix series – which is currently being shot in Scotland – will cover the early days of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s romance.

This afternoon, actress Meg Bellamy – who has been cast as the Princess of Wales – was spotted filming outside one of the St Andrews buildings alongside Ed McVey, who is portraying Prince William.

In one scene, Prince William is seen enjoying a break from lectures and sitting on the steps of a lecture hall with friends.

After sharing a laugh with his peers, the royal appears solemn as Kate walks past.

Although William seems to want to catch Kate’s eye, she seems determined not to return his gaze.

As she glides past, the royal student then appears to check Kate out as she disappears into the distance.

Dressed in a green jacket and brown top, Meg also wore a pair of blue flared jeans.

The costume team completed Kate’s casual student look with some black Ugg shoes and a pleated leather belt that were all the rage in the early noughties.

Meanwhile, Ed was the spitting image of a student Prince William in a navy blue suede jacket, jeans and a red crew-neck jumper.

The focus of the scene seems to be on Art History student Kate – who gazes up at one of the historical building on the campus, which date back to the 15th century.

Following the cold encounter, Meg and Ed were later pictured filming a scene just the two of them.

The pair appeared to be engaged in a emotionally fraught conversation as Prince William looks solemnly at his future girlfriend.

However, the pair didn’t let their on-screen drama stand in the way of their experience of filming – and were seen sharing a laugh in between takes.

The actress, 19, was all smiles as she filmed scenes at the couple’s old university St Andrews in Scotland

Yesterday, Meg also filmed a scene with an actor appearing to portray one of Kate’s former university flames.

Before the Prince and Princess of Wales became an item, Kate was believed to be dating fourth-year law student Rupert Finch.

Photos captured on the set showed Meg walking hand-in-hand with another man as Ed McVey – who has been cast as Prince William – walks past.

What’s more, Meg was also pictured filming scenes for the upcoming season in a pizza restaurant last night.

The pictures show Meg appearing to serve customers seated in the window of the Italian restaurant.

During the scene, someone outside of the restaurant catches Meg’s eye and she then proceeds to give them a shy wave.

Other images show the actress looking pensively out of the window before she then returns to taking a customer order.

It appears the last and sixth series of The Crown will focus on the blossoming love story between William and Kate.

Meg’s rise is set to be meteoric after she was plucked from obscurity to play the Princess of Wales when she submitted a self-taped audition to the makers of the show after seeing the role advertised on social media.

Announcing the casting on Instagram last September, she wrote: ‘Pinch me please… So excited to announce that I will be playing Kate Middleton in Series 6 of Netflix’s The Crown.

‘It is such an honour to be joining the most incredible cast and crew and I will strive to do Kate justice.’

And it seems like the actress will be able to draw on her own life experience for the role, with some striking similarities between her and the royal.

Both Home Counties girls, Meg grew up just 22 miles away from Kate’s childhood home in Berkshire.

At school, it seems both the Princess of Wales and the actress playing her were model pupils. Each made a strong impression on their teachers as kind and humble personalities with a thirst for learning, natural leadership skills and a passion for theatre.

It’s been a busy few days of filming for the show’s cast and crew, with Ed McVey spotted going for a jog and eating chips by St Andrews’ harbour as filming for the sixth series of The Crown continued in the student town earlier this week.

During filming yesterday, Ed was spotted digging into a box of chips while chatting to other members of the filming crew in-between takes in a nod to the Prince of Wales’ favourite student takeaway.

Prince William, 40, and Kate Middleton, 41, were ‘regular customers’ at the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar, in the coastal town of Anstruther, near Fife, while students at St Andrews University 20 years ago, and even revisited it in 2021.

The Prince and Princess of Wales returned to their favourite restaurant and treated themselves to a meal and ice cream, which they ate on a bench by the pier, away from prying eyes.
