Princess Anne joins daughter-in-law Autumn Philips and grandchildren Savannah and Isla

It was a family affair on Saturday, as Princess Anne joined her daughter-in-law Autumn Philips and grandchildren for the annual Gatcombe Horse Trials as they soaked up the last of the summer sun.

Autumn, 41, appeared in high spirits alongside daughters Savannah, eight, and Isla, seven, as the trio enjoyed delicious ice creams as the Gloucestershire trials got into full swing.

Meanwhile Princess Anne, 69, was pictured in excellent spirits as she strolled alongside husband Timothy Laurence, 64, at the event which is held in the grounds of their home in Gatcombe Park.

The Princess Royal was dressed in her usual equestrian ensemble, wearing a plaid shirt, a tweed gilet and chinos while she toted a black backpack.

It was T-shirt weather for the grandchildren, who looked adorable in colorful tops as they larked around, playing with their pet black labradors and enjoying the pleasant weather.

Autumn, who is married to Princess Anne’s only son Peter Philips, put on a relaxed display in a white T-shirt, trainers and jeans, accessorising with aviator sunglasses and wearing her blonde tresses loose.

Timothy, who tends to keep a low profile, wore a blue shirt and a hat, toting a walking stick while he soaked up the atmosphere.

Last year Canadian-born Autumn Phillips marked her ten-year wedding anniversary with the 15th-in-line to the throne.

The former PA is a graduate of McGill University and was born in Montreal, and shares two children with Peter, who is Princess Anne’s eldest child.

Autumn and Peter met during the 2003 Montreal Grand Prix, where they were both working, although she did not realise he was Queen’s grandson at the time.

After dating for a few years, Peter popped the question with her father’s permission.

Today’s Gloucestershire horse trials will see riders competing in the three equestrian disciplines (dressage, show jumping and cross country) combined and competed by horse and rider as a combination.

However, this may be the the year that last trials are held in Gatmcombe Park, which she has helped organsie for 29 years.

The Gatcombe horse trials, with courses designed by the Princess Royal herself, are a firm fixture of the sporting calendar. Anne’s Olympic medal-winning daughter, Zara Tindall, earned her spurs there.

But this year’s trials will be the last at the Princess’s 700-acre Gatcombe estate in Gloucestershire. ‘Our event in the autumn will be the final one at Gatcombe,’ confirmed the organiser, Pattie Biden, in April.

‘I told the Princess that I wanted to retire. I don’t want to talk about it too much, but organising the events is very hard. I don’t always feel that the riders appreciate how much work goes into it.’ She tells me: ‘It will be very sad, but there it is.’

Members of the Royal Family are regularly photographed at the events, which see some of the world’s leading riders compete.
