PSG star Kylian Mbappe wins Golden Boy award

Kylian Mbappe’s spectacular rise to stardom in 2017 saw him crowned the winner of the Golden Boy award.

The PSG star fought off competition from Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele and Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus to claim the prestigious award.

He now follows in the footsteps of the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi and Paul Pogba in winning the annual prize.

Manchester City’s Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus came third after a stellar year in England

The 18-year-old rose to prominence earlier in the year when his six Champions League knockout goals fired Monaco into the semi-finals of the competition.

A call-up to the French national side duly followed, before Ligue 1 rivals PSG sealed a season-long loan for the striker in August.

And he has hit the ground running for his new club, scoring four times in nine games so far.

His stellar year saw him pip Dembele – who excelled at Borussia Dortmund before Barcelona spent £136m to bring the 20-year-old to the Nou Camp.

Gabriel Jesus’ exploits at Manchester City were enough to see him earn a place in the top three. The Brazilian has found the back of the net 15 times in just 23 games.

Marcus Rashford, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Christian Pulisic, Kasper Dolberg, Emre Mor, Federico Chiesa and Rodrigo Bentancur all made up the rest of the top 10.

Mbappe will hope to have better luck than last year’s winner Renato Sanches, whose career stalled at Bayern Munich ahead of a loan move to Swansea in the summer.

Anthony Martial, Raheem Sterling, Paul Pogba and Isco claimed the award in the four previous years.

Former Holland and Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart won the inaugural Golden Boy back in 2003.
