Publix slammed for creating Hurricane Dorian cakes for Florida stores

Bad taste! Publix slammed for creating Hurricane Dorian cakes for several of its Florida stores as the powerful storm barrels towards the sunshine state

  • Several Publix grocery stores in Florida have created Hurricane Dorian cakes
  • The baked treats are topped with icing resembling a radar map showing the hurricane hurtling towards the state
  • Dorian is expected to reach Florida on Memorial Day, at which point it may have been upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane
  • Several shoppers have slammed Publix for creating the cake, as the Hurricane could take lives and cause billions of dollars in damage
  • However, other residents say the sweet treat is an important way of keeping humor in a stressful time

Florida grocery chain Publix is sparking outrage with several of its stores selling a Hurricane Dorian cake as the state prepares to be battered by the monster storm.

The chocolate chip message cookie – which retails for $10.99 – is topped with icing made to look like a radar map and it shows the eye of the storm hurtling towards the Florida.

Shopper Jessica Sullivan first shared a picture of the baked treat on Wednesday, which she spotted on the shelves of Publix in Julington Village.

‘Publix has all your hurricane party supplies,’ she wrote beneath an image of the cake which showed blue frosting resembling the waters around Florida, with green icing made to look like the state.

The cake was made when Dorian was a tropical storm making its way across the Atlantic.

But now, many are left unimpressed by the sweet treat, as Dorian increases in intensity.

By the time it hits Florida on Labor Day, Dorian may be classified as a Category 5 Hurricane, causing immense danger to citizens and wreaking billions of dollars in damage.

Several residents have hit out at Publix for stocking what they deem to be a  ‘distasteful’ product.

‘Your ‘Hurricane’ Cookies are in extremely poor taste and very insensitive,’ one woman wrote on Twitter late Thursday.

‘I second this! #Publix needs to stop that tradition. It’s distasteful and isn’t funny!’ a second lady chimed in.

The grocery store was forced to respond to the criticism, with a media representative writing: ‘Thank you for your feedback on the cakes. It is never our goal to offend anyone with the products we offer and I apologize that we let you down. Individual locations did make some of the hurricane cakes you’ve seen and I will personally share your feedback on this cake.

However, the apology wasn’t enough for one of the women, who blasted back: ‘I lost practically everything to Hurricane Andrew [in 1992]. I do not take it lightly and it’s serious to me. PTSD is real. Everyone knows Public is not going to stop making these just from one complaint, but I felt I had to let them know that some may find them unclassy and insensitive.’

DailyMail.com has contacted Publix for further comment.

Meanwhile, others believed that the Hurricane Dorian cakes were all in good fun, and that it was important to keep a sense of humor during the stressful time.

‘I’m mad Publix can’t make the hurricane  cakes because a few people are too sensitive. We know what’s important but let us have delicious happiness during this stress. It’s important to have a laugh now and again,’ one wrote.

Another stated: ‘People need to stop being mad at stupid things that don’t matter. It’s a damn cake! By the way – Publix is also bottling water, getting it on trucks and into stores faster than anyone. They will be open after the storm to serve. The cake is the last of your worries’.
