Pushy parent Phil Hatfield from Aberystwyth on This Morning

A father who went viral as the ‘pushy parent’ who shoved his young son to make sure he saved a goal has promised not get involved in his next football match.

Phil Hatfield, 35, claims his son Osian, seven, was ‘not focused’ on his goalkeeping duties during a recent Welsh Under 8s game, so he moved behind the goal to ‘guide’ him.

Footage of Mr Hatfield pushing his young son towards the oncoming ball to make sure he saved it has made the pair an internet sensation, with the clip bagging 25million views.

The father and son, of Aberystwyth, Wales, have been inundated with sponsorship offers and have even been offered the chance to meet the Welsh team and their manager Ryan Giggs.

But appearing on This Morning today, he promised to ‘keep quiet’ and ‘stay on the sidelines’ for future matches.

Asked whether he would be getting over-involved in his son’s matches again, Mr Hatfield told hosts Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes: ‘I’m taking him this Saturday, but I will be very quiet and on the sidelines.’

Explaining what happened at the Bow Street Magpies’ game, he added: ‘Well, he wasn’t really paying attention so I went over behind the goal just to try and get him to focus.’

After he pushed Osian towards the football so he could hit it away and defend the goal, he added: ‘It was a gentle nudge.

‘He’s a bit clumsy most of the time, so I think it was a bit of nudging and pushing to be fair.’

He admitted he may have pushed him harder than he intended to – but insisted ‘it wasn’t that hard.’

Describing the overwhelming reaction to their video, Mr Hatfield said: ‘It’s been amazing to be fair.

‘We’ve managed through the papers and the TV to be able to raise good money for the kids’ football team.’

His father being branded the ‘world’s pushiest parent’ hasn’t fazed young Osian, his father claims.

He said: ‘He was straight back on the pitch the following Saturday. He really enjoys his football. He will be in goal again soon.’

In the video, Osian, making his goalkeeping debut for Bow Street Magpies U8s against local rivals Llanilar in Ceredigion, west Wales, collapses to the ground and blocks the striker’s low shot.

But his parry is struck home by Llanilar. As the ball goes into the net, Mr Hatfield turns away in disgust.

Mr Hatfield, a former Bow Street Reserves midfielder, said Osian and his team mates only started playing football six weeks ago and it was his first time in goal.

But despite the 2-2 draw and the unexpected media attention, Osian remains confident and will be taking to the pitch again on Saturday.
