Qantas and Jetstar employ an estimated 30,000 staff – however the The Total Group has vowed to manage this as much as possible through the use of paid and unpaid leave.

‘This will be in addition to measures already announced, including three months of no pay for the CEO and Chairman, significant pay cuts for Group Executive Management and Board members, and cancelling of annual bonuses and an off-market buy back,’ a statement read.

In addition to the international flights no longer in operation around 60 per cent of domestic flights were also scaled back.

This means a total of 150 planes have been grounded.

Earlier 23 per cent of international flights and five per cent of domestic flights for the two airlines were cut from the end of May until mid-September.

In a statement Qantas and Jetstar said these will remain in place and are likely to increase.

A waiver has also been issued for customers who want to cancel their travel due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Anyone who cancels their flight before March 31 for flights until the end of May will receive travel voucher of the same cost.

Coronavirus had led to many Australians cancelling their holidays after Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged people to cancel all ‘non-essential’ international trips.

A travel ban has been put in place for mainland China, Iran, South Korea and Italy.

However people entering Australia – or countries such as New Zealand – must isolate for two weeks upon arrival.

More to come.
