A Qantas flight bound for San Francisco has turned back to Sydney because of a technical issue.

QF73 was forced to return 90 minutes into the flight and is now back on the ground in Sydney, a Qantas spokeswoman said.

Engineers are inspecting the aircraft.

‘We understand delays can be frustrating for our passengers but we’ll always put safety ahead of schedule and our teams are doing everything they can to get passengers back on their way,’ she said.

Mr Lambert, 24, was flying to San Francisco for a holiday, and said passengers had not been panicked.

‘The plane got really bumpy, I’m not sure if that’s normal turbulence – but for about an hour the seatbelt sign didn’t turn off,’ he told AAP.

‘They eventually told us that we would be turning back because the autopilot wasn’t working,’ he added.

Mr Lambert said the flight was full and that passengers were still waiting on the aircraft.
