Queen clings on to her handbag when meeting Boris Johnson

Queen sends social media wild after keeping hold of her handbag while welcoming Boris Johnson to Buckingham Palace – with some joking it looked like she was ‘popping to the shops’

  • The Queen, 93, welcomed Boris Johnson at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday
  • Amused eagle-eyed fans pointed out the monarch’s appreciation for accessories
  • Even when in her own home, the royal’s trusty Launer handbag adorned her arm

The Queen left social media users in stitches after she kept hold hold of her handbag during her first meeting with Boris Johnson as Prime Minister yesterday.

The monarch, 93, welcomed the new Prime Minister to Buckingham Palace yesterday afternoon, shortly after accepting Theresa May’s resignation.

The Queen was typically elegant in a vibrant blue and purple dress for the occasion – but it was her trusty Launer handbag held firmly in the crook of her arm that caught royal watchers’ eyes.

One joked it looked like the Queen was ‘about to pop to the shops’, while others suggested it was simply too much part of her ensemble to be put down.

‘I love the Queen understands the handbag is part of the look,’ one tweeted.

‘I love the way the Queen still carries her handbag around in the house like, for just in case,’ a third added.

A fourth said: ‘Haha look at the Queen throwing shade by wearing a handbag as if she wants to go out haha.’

Others questioned whether the Queen was trying to send a message with her handbag placement.

According to royal historian Hugo Vickers, the monarch uses her bag to send secret signals to her staff to indicate when she’s ready to move on from a conversation.

He told People magazine that shifting her bag from one hand to the other is an indication the royal is ready to end a chat, and it’s been said the Queen will place her bag on a table at events to signal that she’s ready to leave.

A third secret signal is a discreet twist of her wedding ring, which the Queen uses to emphasise that she’d like to be moved on from a conversation quickly.

Based on this, the Queen looked entirely comfortable while speaking to Mr Johnson.

The Queen put on an impeccable display as she welcomed Britain’s new Prime Minister.

Boris was seen bowing to the monarch, as he was appointed to form a new government.

The Queen will now retire to Balmoral Castle in Scotland for the summer, where she will no doubt escape some of the city’s heat.
