Queen Mary of Denmark is effortlessly elegant in floral frock and white trench – as she and her husband King Frederik host a royal reception for athletes that took part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games

Queen Mary of Denmark was effortlessly elegant as she and her husband hosted a royal reception for athletes that took part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games this Thursday.

The couple beamed as they greeted guests at at Fredensborg Palace this afternoon, along with the monarch’s aunt Princess Benedikte, 80.

Opting for a colourful and chic ensemble, Mary, 52, made the most of the summer’s final sun with a flowy pink and orange frock.

She accessorised her floral dress – which included ruffled detailing at the collar – with a belt and teamed the look with a classic white trench coat.

The mother-of-four styled her chestnut tresses in loose waves, and kept her make-up subdued yet glamorous.

Elsewhere, Frederik, 56, was dapper in a simple grey suit which he wore with a purple tie.

Meanwhile the sister of Queen Margrethe – who abdicated earlier this year – wore a lilac dress topped with a bright red and blue jacket.

Athletes appeared in good spirits as they arrived – some sporting their medals – and the King was pictured making a speech.

Both Mary and Frederik made visits to observe the Games in France earlier this year.

Last month, the monarch and his son Crown Prince Christian of Denmark struck victorious poses as they celebrated a gold medal for their country at the Paris Olympics.

Before the game, the father-son duo took to Instagram to send a message of support to the men’s handball team ahead of their final match against Germany.

Alongside a picture of themselves in the stands, they shared a message: ‘We are ready for the lamps when the handball masters are playing the finals in a little while.

‘Let’s hope that Denmark can put a distinguished point at the Olympic Games with a gold medal.’

After Denmark’s triumph, Frederik and Christian looked elated, marking the country’s third successive Olympic medal in the sport, having won one in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Soon after the win, the royal Instagram account shared a new update from Christian and Frederik: ‘Congratulations on the gold,’ the post read.

The first image showed the proud monarch and his oldest son with broad grins across their faces, striking victorious poses with their fists.

The second image was taken during the game and showed Frederik and Christian cheering the Danish team on.

The monarch looked dapper for the occasion, donning a white shirt and red trousers, echoing the colours of the Danish flag.

It comes as Frederik and Mary put on a sophisticated naval display as they marked the end of the royal sailing season yesterday.

The couple officially disembarked from the Dannebrog royal ship in Copenhagen earlier this week, signalling a finish of their traditional summer tour at sea, which kicked off in May.

The King looked dapper in his military uniform, appearing high spirits as he waved at wellwishers.

His wife was effortlessly elegant in a chic navy suit which she accessorised with a sage green clutch.

To add a pop of colour, the mother-of-four tied her chestnut tresses back with a patterned bandana.

Mary highlighted her natural glow with a dewy make-up base, lashings of blush, and a touch of mascara.

The couple grinned and basked in the sunny weather as they left the royal ship.

Earlier this year, the couple boarded the Royal Yacht Dannebrog as they set off for their tour – their first since the King ascended the throne in January.

Over the summer, they have visited the  Faroe Islands and Greenland in June and July. In August, they also sailed around Danish municipalities.
