Queen Mathilde of Belgium has been announced as one of the recipients of this year’s prestigious BAMBI awards. 

The mother-of-four, 46, who serves as a patron for a number of charities is set to be honoured by Hubert Burda Media on November 21st for her commitment to the welfare of people throughout Europe.

BAMBI awards are presented annually to recognise personalities in the field of media, arts, culture and sports whose vision and creativity have inspired the German public.  

At the ceremony in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Queen Mathilde will be honoured as a role model in the charity category following the jury’s decision that she is more than a country representative.

‘The Queen of the Belgian fulfills her role as mother of the nation far beyond the nation’s borders. She cares deeply about the welfare of all people, and she has dedicated her life to this vocation,’ they said.

Referring to her efforts to strengthen the rights of women and children, the jury spoke of Queen Mathilde’s psychology studies as being crucial to her passion for mental health and children’s wellbeing concerns.

The added: ‘Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium is not only the representative of a country, she is also a role model for all the people of Europe’. 

The Belgian royal’s charity work includes being an honorary president of the Child Focus foundation in addition to being an honorary president of UNICEF Belgium. 

She also focuses on supporting vulnerable people living in Belgium with the Queen Mathilde Fund and recently became an SDG Advocate for the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The BAMBI award founded in 1948, has become a way for German people to honour those in the media who’ve given them hope.  

The coveted award attracts a star-studded line-up of international guests each year, with Crown Princess Mary of Denmark who received recognition in 2014, Queen Silvia of Sweden and Queen Rania of Jordan among previous royals to win.

Queen Mathilde has received acknowledgement from Germany in the past for her humanitarian work, with the Sustainability Award in 2017. 

The influential royal has a number of charity engagements in the days leading up to the prestigious awards ceremony including the opening ceremony of the Mukwege International Chair : Building a Future for Women and Children Victimized by Sexual Violence in Conflict: An International Responsibility.
