Queens woman, 66, is found dead wrapped in a sheet in her basement apartment with her throat slashed

A woman has been found dead in her basement apartment with her throat slashed.

Janice Matthews, 66, was found dead on Thursday, her body wrapped in a sheet on a bed in the basement of the three-story home on 172nd Street in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York.

Police said that the murder ‘appears to be domestic related’ and an investigation is ongoing.

‘It will be solved,’ a police source told the New York Daily News.

A neighbor said that she last saw Matthews on Tuesday while taking out the trash.

On Thursday morning, police responded to the home on a welfare check after Matthews’ daughter was unable to get in touch with her.

But the police left nothing seemed to be amiss. The returned later in the day after the body was found in the basement, the neighbor said.

Another neighbor described Matthews at ‘joyous, amiable, cordial.’ 

‘I was sorry to hear she died in such a tragedy,’ neighbor Paul Wint, 61, told the News. ‘I never saw her as somebody who could be off or anything like that.
