Queensland Boy plays with venomous spider

This is the terrifying moment a young boy held a scary-looking venomous spider in his hands and gleefully declared the creature’s name was ‘Ben’.

In this remarkable footage, Asher, son of Lisa Vankula Donovan, who is a self-proclaimed ‘bug nerd’, from Queensland, remained completely calm as a huge spider roamed his arms.

Lisa, who recorded the footage, said she had taught her son how to handle the Golden Silk Orb-Weaver without making it feel threatened.

The creature is of low risk to humans because of its lack of aggression and since this particular spider’s venom creates symptoms of mild numbness and swelling when bitten.

In the clip, Asher helped the spider move around his arms, while his mother asked him what he was going to name the creature, to which he replied: ‘Ben’.

The young boy added that the spider ‘is biting food off my arm because I ate some grapes’.

The doting mother, who helps people overcome their fear of the arachnids, said this type of spider is often used in school shows.

Asher kept asking his mother if he could hold one and eventually she let him, after discussing the basics of hand holding and ensuring the spider doesn’t feel threatened.

The Golden Silk Orb-Weaver is native to Australia.

The video was posted on Lisa’s Instagram on February 22.
