A heartbroken Queensland man has ‘blamed himself’ after his dog Freckles was eaten by a three-metre crocodile.

Johnathan Twist, 65, was fishing at Wonga Beach on Tuesday morning when a large crocodile jumped out of the water and took his female cattle-cross.

‘A big crocodile came up from behind her, grabbed her, and just dived under the waves – it was just gone,’ Mr Twist told Cairns Post.

Mr Twist, who has lived in the area for over 20 years, partly blamed himself for his dog’s death.

‘Freckles used to come with me, and she used to go to the net and eat the fish out of there,’ he said.

‘She used to enjoy it, and she was always in such close proximity.’

The Department of Environment and Science warned people to be cautious of salt water crocs in Far North Queen slander.

But Mr Twist said the department should be more proactive and ‘relocate any crocs over 10-12 feet’.
