Water police on patrol could hardly believe their luck when a breaching humpback whale appeared by their boat and stayed to ‘dance’ in the water for over an hour.
Sergeant Mick Jones and Constable Jemma Crowley from Sarina Police Station in Queensland were out patrolling on Sunday, keeping a close eye on fishermen.
As they were floating around near Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay, the huge whale appeared and breached right beside their boat.

It would occasionally lift it’s fin as if it is waving at the officers before it splashed them with water

‘G’day, hello beautiful. Look at you…wow!’ Sergeant Jones can be heard saying.
Constable Crowley is seen with a huge smile on her face, excited at the whale’s appearance.
‘This is really the greatest thing I’ve ever seen,’ she said.
The whale continues to circle their boat and lift its fin as if it is waving at the officers, before splashing them with water.

Sgt Jones said the whale came so close as it was breaching that you could see its whiskers
‘You could see where a great white shark had tried to attack it on its belly,’ Sgt Jones told The Daily Mercury.
‘It was rolling on its belly…doing pirouettes, it would roll over and roll its head up.’
He also said that it came so close you could see its whiskers.
The pair were a bit cautious of the mammal hitting the boat, but were surprised when it just continued to circle and play with them.
‘The whole time it was flapping and flopping and carrying on, not once did it rush the hull of the boat,’ Sgt Jones said.
Both Sgt Jones and Constable Crowley posed and took a selfie with the mammal.
They commended the people on boats nearby for steering clear of the whale.
