An artistic woman who transformed a second-hand chair into a ‘masterpiece’ using nothing but tattered old T-shirts has become an internet sensation.

Marina Duson, from Queensland, bought a pre-loved Kmart egg chair on Facebook marketplace and spent ‘about 20 hours’ covering it with colourful fabric from ’15 to 20′ torn up tops made into rag mats.

Sharing her handiwork in the ‘Upcycleit’ Facebook group, which has 233,700 members, Ms Duson said she wove the material through the wires of the chair, pulling it over and under before tying each strip in place with a knot.

Photos of her project, which have gone viral, racking up more than 3,600 ‘likes’ since they were uploaded online less than 24 hours ago, swiftly sparked hundreds of delighted responses.

‘It was very therapeutic and addictive to see it come together,’ Ms Duson wrote.

‘I pulled rags out of the mat. [You] don’t even need to cut cotton threads. Then weave rags over and under chair structure,’ she wrote.

She continued: ‘I tied a lot of rags together with very small knot, then started the next colour and tucked the knot into the weave.’

Ms Duson said she stayed up until well after midnight three nights in a row to finish the chair.

Her patience quickly captured imaginations on social media, with hundreds raving about the unique creation.

‘This is an awesome piece, well done,’ one woman wrote.

‘I love it, I want to have a crack at doing this,’ said a second, while a third called it a ‘magnificent masterpiece’.

A fourth added: ‘Wow. That looks fantastic, comfortable and will last a long time.’

Many thanked Ms Duson for inspiring them to get creative in lockdown, while others joked that the ideas posted to the ‘upcycling’ page are taking up too much of their time.

‘I should never have joined this group! Lol. So much stuff I want to try!’ one woman said.
