Powerball’s newest jackpot winner only found out he had won $40million after his pet cat forced him to answer his phone.

The healthcare worker from Cairns, in Queensland, confessed he only picked up the call because his cat lunged at his phone.

On the other end of the line was Matt Hart from The Lott, who broke the news he’d just won Thursday night’s major jackpot.

Mr Hart told Sunrise: ‘I rang once and he didn’t answer and then I rang a second time and he did pick up the phone. And that’s when he told me it was only because of his cat.’

The healthcare worker also raked in an additional $430,542.90 after his PowerHit entry won division two 19 times.

He mulled over his unbelievable win by taking a shower.

‘I thought I would check my ticket before bed. I was quite calm. I knew I had some of the numbers and thought I might have won division six,’ he said.

‘Then I had another look and thought ”no, you b******s are wrong!”. I had a look again. Then I went and had a shower.’

The numbers for Thursday’s draw 1227 were 1, 12, 3, 2, 25, 13 and 23 – and the Powerball was 1.

The ecstatic man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the winning PowerHit entry at newsXpress Edge Hill on Collins Avenue in Edge Hill.

Shop owner Maxine Hare said this was the store’s sixth division one sold within the 16 years that the newsagent had been opened.

Mr Hart previously said any division one winners would join the 12 other Australians who have won a multi-million-dollar Powerball prize so far this year.

‘2019 has been a historic year for Powerball, with record-breaking jackpots offered and a delighted dozen receiving more than $477.5 million worth of life-changing prize money,’ he said.
