Quickfire with Love Island’s Chris Hughes

The reality-TV star on bathroom secrets, scary snakes and wanting to be married

Chris Hughes says he’d like to be as suave as Richard Gere but laughs when he looks in the mirror

Guilty pleasure? Staying in the shower for at least 45 minutes. It’s the same when I go to the loo – I can sit there for about an hour until I end up with pins and needles.

Where is home? I divide my time between our family farm in the Cotswolds and the house in Surrey that I was supposed to share with my ex-girlfriend Olivia, who I met on Love Island.

Career plan B? Something involving golf – just as long as I’m not stuck in an office.

Who would play you in a movie of your life? Richard Gere. I know he is getting on, but he is so suave in Pretty Woman, my favourite film.

As a child you wanted to be… A jump jockey, but I became too tall and heavy.

Secret to a happy relationship? Find somebody who you genuinely like and can have fun with. You can love someone, but not really get on with them.

Your best quality? I always have time for people.

And your worst? My sleep pattern is terrible and I find it difficult to get up in the morning.

Most romantic thing you’ve ever done? There’s not one big gesture, but I am a romantic person and do lots of little sentimental things.

Last meal on earth? A full English breakfast. It’s what I had today at Jonjo O’Neill’s racing yard.

Dream dinner-party guest? A one-to-one with Patrick Swayze, because I really liked him in Point Break.

Advice to teenage self? Don’t beat yourself up when things aren’t going right. Remain patient and treat each day as it comes.

Cat or dog? I am definitely a dog person. We have eight on the farm.

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Me! I just laugh when I look.

Big break? Love Island.

Career highlight? Being commissioned to do my own TV show, Straight Outta Love Island, with my mate Kem [Cetinay] within a week of finishing Love Island.

Most embarrassing moment? I don’t take myself seriously enough to get embarrassed about anything.

Favourite tipple? Double vodka, lime and lemonade.

Hangover cure? 7 Up, sleep and a good girl to cuddle.

Top of your bucket list? To tick off a few cultural things in South America, such as the Christ the Redeemer statue, and to see the Amazon.

One thing that would make your life better? Being married.

Philosophy? Keep smiling when things get tough – it sends positive energy through your body.

Biggest lesson you’ve learnt about women? Never argue with them because they’re always right.

Last film that made you cry? The Notebook. I had never seen it until a few months ago.

First record you bought? An album by my favourite band, The Libertines.

Most extravagant purchase? A pair of Dolce & Gabbana trainers that I bought about six months ago and cost me £600. I’ve never worn them.

Biggest fear? You wouldn’t see me within a mile of a snake.

Celebrity crush? Jessica Alba.

Happiness is… A sun-filled golf weekend abroad with mates and knowing that when you’ve finished playing, you’re going on the lash.
