Rachel Zegler takes home her first award winning Best Actress from the National Board of Review

After earning rave reviews for her first ever film performance in director Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake, Rachel Zegler has taken home her first award.

The 20-year-old actress, who beat out more than 30,000 other hopeful actresses to win the iconic role of Maria, was named Best Actress by the National Board of Review on Thursday, one of the major early indicators for awards season.

West Side Story was also named one of the 10 best films of the year by organization, with all of the awards to be handed out at its annual gala on Tuesday, January 11.

Zegler responded in a tweet, with an image that featured all of the winners announced by the NBR on Thursday.

‘Oh my God. Thank you, @NBRFilm,’ Zegler tweeted on Thursday afternoon, which received over 2K likes.

The win comes just hours after she appeared on Good Morning America in New York City, and just days after the film’s premiere in the Big Apple.

Thursday is also when the first wave of film reviews were published, with the musical adaptation earning an astonishing 96% on Rotten Tomatoes out of 55 reviews.

Zegler plays Maria, a role played by Carol Lawrence in the original 1957 Broadway production and Natalie Wood in the 1961 adaptation, which won 10 Oscars including Best Picture.

Maria finds herself caught in the middle of two gangs, the Puerto Rican gang The Jets and the white gang The Sharks.

Her brother Bernardo (David Alvarez) runs the Jets, while Maria has found herself falling for Tony (Ansel Elgort), one of the Sharks. 

The film, which opens in theaters on December 10, was listed as one of NBR’s ten best of the year, alongside Belfast, Don’t Look Up, Dune, King Richard, The Last Duel, Nightmare Alley, Red Rocket and The Tragedy of Macbeth.

It could be the first of many awards for Zegler this awards season, given the critical acclaim of this highly-anticipated movie.

West Side Story also stars Ariana DeBose as Anita, Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank and Rita Moreno as Valentina, who played Anita in the 1961 film adaptation.

Zegers will be making the leap to the superhero realm for her next film, starring in an unspecified role in Shazam: Fury of the Gods, slated for release on June 2, 2023.

She will also portray the beloved title character in a new live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, also expected in 2023.
