Rain drowns Perth and floods highways less 38C weather

The people of Perth have gone from basking in 38C sunshine to running for cover as heavy rain brought on by ex-Tropical Cyclone Joyce belts down in the city.

Unseasonal clouds stained the sky on Monday morning before 20mm of rain fell on the city at about midday – flooding the Mitchel Freeway.

The major road was closed southbound because of the excess water, according to Main Roads WA.

And according to the Bureau of Meteorology there is more rain to come with up to 45mm expected on Monday night followed by storms and patchy showers until Wednesday.

The bureau have put a warning out to motorists, following the dramatic weather, asking them to drive carefully on slippery roads.

On Monday the city was hit with more rainfall in one afternoon than the month’s average of 16.7mm.

Up to 80mm of rain could fall until Wednesday – according to the bureau.
