Bulletproof vehicles are becoming all the rage in the automotive industry.

Range Rover’s updated Sentinel, a bulletproof luxury SUV that was first released in 2015, is helping to grow the market for armored vehicles.

There are currently between 200,000 and 300,000 armored vehicles worldwide, but market watchers expect that figure to continue rising alongside political instability around the world.

According to a new report from the LA Times, the bulletproof vehicle business has become increasingly lucrative, with multiple manufacturers forecasting growth near ‘double digits, year over year, for the foreseeable future.’

The 2020 Sentinel is armored to withstand a pointblank pipe bomb and gunfire from an AK-47 or AR-15.

‘People are worried about random acts of violence,’ Mark Burton, of the custom armoring company ArmorMax, told the LA Times.

‘They’re the attorneys, they are the doctors, the business executives.’

‘They’re worried about their families or their wives being at the wrong place at the wrong time.’

Building an armored car is a complicated affair.

WHAT’S IN THE 2020 SENTINEL

Sentinel is the newest armored luxury SUV from Range Rover, part of a line that was released in 2015.

The newest model has fully armored windows, paneling, roof, and is equipped with under-floor blast protection.

Range Rover says it can withstand a point-blank pipe bomb explosion as well as AR-15 fire.

The car weights 10,000 pounds and comes with a V-8 engine that delivers 521 horsepower.

Price: Range Rover isn’t saying but the 2015 version of the SUV started at $465,000

While the car might outwardly look normal, bulletproof paneling brings a huge added cost and weight, requiring a fundamentally different approach to engineering.

The Sentinel weighs more than double a standard Range Rover, roughly 10,000 pounds.

To carry all that added weight, the Sentinel comes with a powerful V-8 engine that delivers 510 horsepower and has a top speed of 120 MPH.

The car also comes with tires that can be driven for 30 miles after being pierced or punctured, at speeds of up to 50 MPH.

The car comes equipped with a rear escape hatch through the luggage compartment, for cases when the vehicle’s doors might be blocked.

It also comes with a built-in PA system, allowing passengers to communicate without having to expose themselves while in the vehicle.

Range Rover doesn’t disclose the price of its newest Sentinel, but the 2015 model started at $445,000.

While armored cars have been most useful in regions of political instability, they have also been a vanity purchase among celebrities.

In 2013, Kanye West, TI and Sacha Baron Cohen all purchased armored vehicles.

In 2018, a Chinese manufacturer earned the distinction of having designed the most expensive SUV to-date, with the $2 million Karlmann King.

Only ten Kings were made. The cars weighed between 4.5 tons and 6 tons, and came with a built-in espresso maker, refrigerator, and PlayStation 4.
