Raphael Varane’s representatives ‘hope to open negotiations over a Manchester United move THIS WEEK’ after defender turned down a new Real Madrid contract

  • Raphael Varane’s representatives want to begin negotiations with Man United
  • The defender rejected a two-year extension to his Real Madrid contract
  • The Frenchman has 12 months left on his current deal at the Bernabeu
  • The LaLiga side will demand £50million for the 28-year-old centre back

Raphael Varane and his representatives will reportedly look to begin negotiations with Manchester United this week as the defender looks to seal a move to Old Trafford.

The defender rejected Real Madrid’s offer of a two-year extension to his contract, which has 12 months remaining, and is set on leaving the LaLiga club after 10 years in Spain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are one of the main teams interested in signing the 28-year-old this summer and The Mirror report that Varane’s agents are hoping to meet with United this week.

The Red Devils want to strenghthen their defensive options and have also been linked with a move for Kieran Trippier.

Varane, who is currently competing at Euro 2020 with France, is reportedly unhappy that Real chose to negotiate with Luka Modric, Lucas Vazquez and Sergio Ramos ahead of him.

Ramos has now left the club after rejecting a one-year deal with a pay-cut (10 per cent of his current wage in line with the cut offered to other players because of the coronavirus’ impact on Real Madrid’s finances).

Sportsmail revealed on Thursday that United will not be making a move for Ramos, despite having previous interest in the Spain defender when Louis van Gaal was manager.

Real signed Bayern Munich defender David Alaba on a free transfer earlier this summer, with Eder Militao and Nacho the other two recognised centre-halves at the club.

The club feel they have enough cover to allow Varane to leave for the right fee but are said to want around £50million.

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested but the defender is said to favour a move to England.

Varane has won three LaLiga titles, four Champions League trophies and four FIFA Club World Cups with the Spanish giants.

The defender made 41 appearances in all competitions last season as Real finished second in LaLiga and were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-final.
